Quick picks
What to look for
- Over-ear models block more noise and last longer on a charge. Earbuds are easier to carry and better for the gym.
- Active noise cancelling (ANC) is worth paying for if you commute, fly or work somewhere loud.
- Phone matters: AirPods work best with an iPhone, and Galaxy Buds with a Samsung phone. Sony, Bose and JBL work fine with both.
- Last year's model is often much cheaper and nearly as good. The Sony XM5 and XM6 are a common example.
- Gaming headsets with a boom mic are better for voice chat. Music headphones usually sound better for the money.
